National 4-H Conference is a working conference - and the work begins before delegates arrive to the conference. Delegates should be well informed about their local 4-H program, local/state 4-H demographics, 4-H programming within the state, the role of Cooperative Extension and the land-grant university in 4-H, and most importantly, the basic history and structure of 4-H.
Delegates can use this list of Recommended Questions to better prepare themselves for discussions and opportunities for information sharing at Conference. Responses will not be collected; the goal is simply for delegates attending National 4-H Conference to come better informed about their 4-H program.
Delegation Platforms – NEW!!!
As delegates prepare themselves for discussions and information sharing at Conference, state/institution delegations are asked to put together a State Delegation Platform. Quite simply, delegations should be able to answer the question – What are the key programs, topics or issues that are significant to your state/institution/local 4-H programs?
The formal definition of Platform is:
- a body of principles on which a person or group takes a stand in appealing to the public; program. (Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1); Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.)
Delegation Platforms are a means for delegates to express the distinct, diverse views representative of their local 4-H program, community and state. It is an opportunity for youth delegates to share an authentic statement of what they feel is most important to share with National 4-H Headquarters, the 4-H system, congressional leaders and others who determine 4-H programs.
Each delegate should provide input into the platform statement and be able to articulate their state’s platform.
Statements should be no more than one-page in length. Statements will be collected from states at a designated time during Conference. Please ensure that each member of your delegation has a copy of their Delegation Platform to refer to during round table sessions, and other activities.
